VTCT Acquires ITEC

The Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) is delighted to announce that, as of 8 November 2016, it has acquired EMS Limited which trades as ITEC, the internationally-recognised Awarding Organisation and Examination Board. Corporate finance boutique Adam Street advised the vendors on the sale.

The Trustees of VTCT and Directors of EMS Limited have entered into the acquisition agreement with a view to combining the strengths of the respective organisations and enhancing the services offered for the benefit of both centres and learners.

Ongoing changes in the market have increased the likelihood of consolidation in the qualifications sector, and ITEC were identified as the preferred and best-placed organisation to help VTCT realise its growth objectives. Additionally, ITEC, as a leading Awarding Organisation and brand will enable VTCT to ensure that the highest standards of qualification development and quality assurance are maintained in the global health, wellbeing, hairdressing and beauty-related industries.

Alan Woods OBE, CEO of VTCT said, “We were keen to acquire ITEC not only because it’s highly respected in our sector, but crucially it also shares our values and ambitions, placing strong emphasis on quality assurance, learner success, employer recognition and exceptional customer service.

“This acquisition aligns with our growth strategy to continue the development of our portfolio in Beauty and Spa; Complementary Therapy; Hairdressing; Sports and Fitness, and Customer Service qualifications. We’re very excited about the strong international profile ITEC brings, along with a rigorous and highly reliable examination approach which contrasts well with VTCT’s assessment models, allowing all of our approved centres to choose how they would like their learners assessed.

“We are confident that by bringing together ITEC, VTCT and Digital Assess – our e-assessment business - we will be able to further enhance the experience we offer to learners while continuing to provide the excellent service our customers expect from us.

"We would like to assure both ITEC and VTCT approved centres that there will be no interruption to your service - you will continue to be supported in the best way possible by your usual teams. Should you have any queries about this, please speak to your usual contacts at either ITEC or VTCT who will be happy to help you.”

Jane Foulston, CEO of ITEC said, “ITEC and VTCT are both industry specialists with beauty therapy and hairdressing at their core, so there is already a natural synergy between the two organisations.

“With the strong international base that ITEC has developed and the dominance of VTCT in the UK, putting the two organisations together equates to the largest specialised Awarding Organisation in the hair and beauty sectors.

“I am delighted with this acquisition as it is the perfect fit.  It will enable both organisations to continue to grow and flourish even further. ITEC has always provided and will continue to provide one standard for the World offering prestigious examination-based qualifications. I am looking forward to being involved with such an exciting organisation in these fast-moving times.  I would like to assure all our ITEC Customers that it’s business as usual.”

VTCT acquires Digital Assess

Digital Assess acquired by VTCT as part of a strategic investment in the business

Leading awarding organisation, Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) has acquired Digital Assess in a strategic move designed to add significant value to the suite of products and services it offers its customers.

Digital Assess provides a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) suite of products enabling training providers to capture and assess learner skills from one location. This purchase by VTCT is reflective of the growing importance of offering flexible, online-based assessments that meet all necessary quality standards and requirements.

Alan Woods, VTCT’s CEO said, “To compete in this market, both here and overseas, we need to innovate and add value to our customers. VTCT has recently completed a strategic overhaul of our business, and we’ve been actively seeking opportunities in the digital space that will allow us to offer a broader range of value-adding services. Luckily, Digital Assess – a company that has been on our radar for a while – was available at the right time. It’s a great product with a skilled and dedicated team, and we’re convinced this acquisition will enhance the fortunes of VTCT, Digital Assess, and all of our current and future customers.

I’d like to reassure Digital Assess’s customers that, despite the change in ownership, it’s business as usual.”

VTCT’s intention is that Digital Assess will continue to operate as a standalone business, with its own Management Team and Board, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of VTCT.

Dan Sandhu from Digital Assess said, “This is an exciting time in the vocational market and with the support of and as part of VTCT, the team at Digital Assess look forward to continuing to deliver innovative assessment products into this market.”

VTCT, Vocational Training Charitable Trust, is pleased to announce it has appointed Alan Woods OBE, to succeed Dr Stephen Vickers, as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with effect from 1 January 2016.

VTCT is a Government-approved awarding organisation which has awarded world class qualifications since 1962 and has been at the forefront of developing the vocational system of qualifications in the United Kingdom ever since. Its full qualification package includes Hairdressing & Barbering, Beauty Therapy, Complementary Therapy, Sport, Active Health & Fitness, Hospitality, Business & Retail and Learning & Development.

Alan arrives after leading on Apprenticeships and Vocational Education with the University of Law (ULaw) for the past 18 months. During his period with the University, Alan has developed innovative new apprenticeship schemes and developed new partnerships with leading Further Education and 6th Form Colleges. Prior to working with ULaw he led Skills for Justice (as Group Chief Executive). Skills for Justice is a Sector Skills Council (SSC) licensed by the Government to work with employers on competences, skills and apprenticeships.

With more than 800 approved centres, VTCT has an ever expanding list of centres throughout the UK, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Cyprus, Kenya, India and South Africa. VTCT is a charitable organisation and its main activity as an awarding body is also its first charitable objective; to develop and provide high quality education and qualifications for the service industries.

Chris Laws, Chair of VTCT, said: "We've signalled our intention to develop the scope and reach of VTCT. Alan's appointment as our new CEO is a key next stage for us, as we engage with new employers and potential partners, as well as delivering the best services we can to existing employers and education providers. He brings a wealth of knowledge to VTCT in skills development and we are looking forward to him leading the staff of VTCT and delivering the strategy of the Board of Trustees. I would also like to pay tribute to his predecessor Stephen Vickers, who after his retirement will continue to work in Assessment across the EU, for the work he has done in leading VTCT to this new stage of its development. Stephen will be supporting Alan, until February as he takes up the reins.”

Commenting on his appointment, Alan Woods said: “I am delighted and honoured to be appointed as VTCT’s new CEO as it develops its ambition to be the Awarding Organisation of choice for learners and employers.
